About Prairie Star Quilts In 1986 John Jensen opened a quilt shop in Elk Horn, Iowa (it was named Cozy Quilt). He started with a long arm quilting machine and about 100 bolts of fabric. Not being a quilter himself, he hired several local quilters. In the next six years fabric was added and classes were held. As there were very few quilt shops in Iowa at the time, it became a destination shop. John was ready to close in 1992 but offered the shop for sale to his employees. Julie Larsen purchased the shop and renamed it Prairie Star Quilts. More classes and lots of fabric were added. Quilt retreats were established. The shop began vending at quilt shows in several states and became even more well known. It also became known for original designs (by Julie and several staff members), block of the month clubs, an abundance of samples and kits for almost all of them. Over the years flannel became very important in the shop as well as 19th Century reproductions, but many other types of fabric including batiks, contemporary, brights and novelties were also carried. In 2000 shop size more than doubled with a new addition. Prairie Star Quilts was recognized as a Top Ten Shop by Quilt Sampler Magazine in 2002. A separate building was purchased in 2005 to serve as a retreat center. Julie's popular quilt blog was added in 2007. In 2009 she began a series of TV programs, Quilting with Julie on local access channel 99. Prairie Homefront the first fabric line designed by Julie Larsen debuted in 2010. The staff at Priairie Star Quilts has always prided itself in being as friendly, knowledgeable and helpful as possible.
